Current Exhibition: Drawings by Lucinda Boyd

Born in England in 1954, Lucinda Boyd is a self-taught artist. Her parents, David and Hermia Boyd encouraged their children to paint and draw from an early age and gave helpful advice on technique and use of various media. Lucinda studied life-drawing, etching and later hand-wrought jewellery making. Lucinda began working with pastels after moving from Sydney to the Hunter Valley in 1983. This move gave her the first opportunity to observe the Australian bush for any length of time. A series of landscapes was produced and in 1985 Lucinda held her first solo exhibition at the Von Bertouch Galleries in Newcastle.

Lucinda moved in 1997 to Reidsdale located on the south-eastern fall of the Southern Tablelands. The quality of the light and the colours of the surrounding bush have been the inspiration for her work. Her pastel works reflect the landscape of the local environment and her favourite drawing spots – along the shores of the upper Shoalhaven River, the Bombay waterhole and the hills that surround the township of Braidwood. Drawn prior to the bushfires that ravaged the area in early 2020, the river landscape seen in her pastel drawings is now almost unrecognisable. This area now brims with new energy and regenerative growth following the high rainfall in the area.

Pastels are the artist’s preferred medium to work with – their chalky quality captures the dry, hardiness and dappled light of the Australian bush. Lucinda has mastered the medium, seen in the delicate details within her work and the softness of light that imbues her subjects.

Lucinda Boyd's work is held in private and corporate collections across Australia, in the United Kingdom, France and the USA .
